Taking Up This Challenge
Core power yoga is an energetic yoga exercise that is physically and mentally challenging to help connect to inner power without stopping and accompanied by a heated, climate controlled Vinyasa. It heals, detoxifies and stimulates the body and mind through balance and intention.
Power yoga has created a dynamic, challenging program that combines strength, sweat and spirituality. It recognizes power in different levels; first is the physical power which develops the body’s strength and improves health; second is the mental power or the will to concentrate on the practice; and last the spiritual power which is the power behind the physical and mental power.
So, What Is Core Power Yoga?

Core power yoga is the Western version of the Indian Ashtanga Yoga. The term was given by Beryl Bender Birch, an Ashtanga Yoga teacher. It has been brought to the west by followers of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Sanskrit scholar who inspired Western Yogis with his Ashtanga Yoga Style and philosophies.
There are three programs in power yoga. “Core Power” is designed to strengthen abdominals and back and includes both abs-focused Vinyasa power yoga poses and variations of muscle-toning moves. “Unlocking Athletic Power” will develop flexible strength with an emphasis on abs, back, hips and pelvis. “Soul of Strength” on the other hand is a fast-moving power yoga program with a distinct “mid-body” emphasis and some very challenging moves.
Yoga sessions are done in a heated room and composed of different cardiovascular exercises intended to develop strength and flexibility, increase stamina, improve the ability to focus, release tensions and remove toxins through sweating.
Getting Started
Here we are combining your strength training session and your cardio routine and exercises with your regular yoga poses. Added to this is the playing of your favorite upbeat music in the background. This adds to the interconnection of your physical strength and your mental focus, and thereby your body and your mind is strengthened simultaneously. You will now have a cohesive workout on your balance, while remaining flexible. Added to this is your cardio integration and resistance training building your core strength.
Muscle groups which will be impacted include your abdominal muscles as well as the back muscles, hips and glutes. It is this activity that will support your spine as well as improve posture, while helping you with your balance and stability during any physical activity. In your Core Power Yoga, you will have planks, twists, crunches, balancing poses, which targets your core, and abdominal block as well.
It is these types of exercises that are combined with your traditional yoga poses such as the Airplane, the Baby Grasshopper or even the Crescent Lunge Pose, which create the workout.
Core power yoga practice also requires the execution of yoga poses. Poses are done at a fast pace, some poses are even held longer than the required five breaths. This practice can increase physical endurance and the ability to focus on any task for a long time, without breaking the concentration.
What is the difference between core power yoga and other exercises?
Core power yoga is a vinyasa style that has a unique program offering and focuses on core strength, balance and flow to build a solid practice based on strength and spirit. Just to update – Vinyasa is a style where your movement and breathing is in sync, and there is a continual flow from one poses to the other, rather than holding your breath and or pose statically. It is a coordination which helps to build your cardiovascular endurance and flexibility as well as your strength.
In This You Will Have
- High Variability – There is no fixed sequence routine and this can mean varied yoga sessions which can be creative and paced at times, stretching persons to keep up their speed in movement.
- Movement Sync Breathing – As you move and transition, it is tied to either an inhalation or exhalation (breathing in or out), and the breath is linked to how you are moving into each pose.
- Transition Fluidity – Where each pose goes from one into the other in as seamless a transition as possible.
In a session for example – you can move from Plank to Chaturanga Dandasana to Upward Facing Dog then to Downward Facing Dog.
