It’s no secret that having a good diet is the catalyst for good health. Same can be said about diet when it comes to pregnant women. It’s so crucial for them to get the nutrients they need in order for their still unborn babies to develop properly. There really aren’t that many differences that you need to make to your diet compared to a normal healthy diet, but there still are a few things that you need to keep in mind.
Don’t overcomplicate everything. Just focus on getting the basic healthy foods into your diet like fruits and vegetables. Get some protein and healthy fats. These things need to be the staple of your diet. And be sure to consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.
Also, remember that you can still eat the foods that you enjoy and don’t restrict yourself with a super low-calorie diet. It’s actually really easy to find healthy alternatives to your favourite so-called “junky foods” that are much healthier, have way fewer calories and still taste delicious.
What about the quantity of food? Should you eat less? Should you eat more? And by how much?
Again, you don’t have to make it more complicated than it actually is. It’s probably a good idea to eat more, but that doesn’t mean you should be overfeeding yourself. Of course, the developing organism of the baby needs to be supported by the food you are eating, but there is such a thing as too much.
Having a decent knowledge of calories can help you a lot. And as we said you shouldn’t be on a super strict diet. One thing you can do to improve your diet right now is to make small changes.
If you like full-fat yoghurt get 0% fat yoghurt for way fewer calories. If you like to cook with oil, switch to a spray and just use it for a second or two. From regular milk to cashew or almond milk. From whole eggs to just egg whites.
These little changes add up over time and overall you start eating a lot better and like your diet a lot more because you are more satiated thanks to these food changes. That also proves that you don’t need to eat boring and tasteless foods all the time. You can definitely add some enjoyment into your diet if you are being smart about it.
These diet changes are not very significant compared to “the regular” healthy diet. And that’s the point. You should be eating healthy, regardless of if you are having a baby or not. Most importantly you gotta do it for yourself. Still, you gotta do it for the baby and you should use that fact as motivation to change your own eating habits for the rest of your life. And finally, remember that you really need to take care of yourself during this period.
